10. Explain the reason why pure copper (Cu) has a very distinct reddish color (or appearance).

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Copper has a distinct red-orange(reddish) color. The reason is that any object is colored is that the object absorbs some wavelengths of light and reflects other wavelengths of light, when light is shined upon copper metal, the copper atoms absorb some of the light in the blue-green region of the spectrum . When an object absorbs one color of light, its complementary color is reflected back to our eyes. Since blue-green light is absorbed, its complementary color, red-orange, is reflected. Hence copper appears a red-orange color which is reddish color.

The “hue” is the color, independent of brightness and how much pure white has been added to it. We can make a simple definition of hue as the set of ratios R:G:B. (a) Suppose a color (i.e., an RGB) is divided by 2.0, so that the RGB triple now has values 0.5 times its former values. Explain using numerical values: i. If gamma correction is applied after the division by 2.0 and before the color is stored, does the darker...

Explain briefly why recrystallization can never result in 100% mass recovery even if you used pure material. Also explain why mass recovery is greater if you cool to 0 degrees C rather than room temperature. Explain very briefly why mass recovery is reduced if you use an excess amount of boiling solvent and why washing product crystals with excessive amounts of solvent especially warm solvent can result in reduced mass recovery.

Rose gold, gold that has been alloyed heavily with copper, has become very popular in recent years. 14 carat rose gold consists of 58% gold; 18 carat rose gold contains 75% gold.; 22 carat rose gold consists of 91% gold. Given that 14 carat rose gold sells at $32 per gram, and 22 carat rose gold sells at $50 per gram, what do you expect the price of 18 carat rose gold to be? Explain your thinking.
