Features of keyboard

A keyboard contains numbers of keys, buttons or levers, which activate hammers plectra, pads or other devices for playing musical notes.

A row of keys is conventionally called a manual. Certain instruments - like organs - may have several manuals arranged in echelon.

Mechanisms activated by keyboards include strings, reeds, pipes, bells and electronic instruments.

Keyboards are usually arranged in a linear or curvilinear pattern so they may be easily accessed by a player. The dimensions, now largely standardised, permit separation between fingers or feet.

A keyboard operated by the feet is conventionally called a pedal board and has larger dimensions appropriate to the feet.

Keyboards are usually arranged in a conventional pattern differentiating between certain notes. For example on keyboards used for Western music accidentals have a different colour and different positioning to other notes.

Keys may be given different responses to touch by being sprung, balanced, and or weighted.

The force or velocity applied to keys may be interpreted by mechanisms or sensors in different ways that interpret attack, volume or swell
