Consider a design of a Point-to-Point link connecting Local Area Network (LAN) in separate buildings across a freeway for Distance of 25 miles which uses Line of Sight (LOS) communication with unlicensed spectrum 802.11b at 2.4GHz. The Maximum transmit power of 802.11 is Pt = 24 dBm and the minimum received signal strength (RSS) for 11 Mbps operation is -80 dBm. Calculate the received signal power and verify the result is adequate for communication or not?

Answer #1

Answer -

   Given,

Distance d = 0.25 mile = 0.25 x 1609.34 = 402.335 m

Transmitter power Pt = 24 dBm

Receiver Sensitivity Threshold = - 80 dBm

f = 2.4 GHz

The received power is,

Pr is well above the the required -80 dBm for communication at maximum data rate. So link should work fine.
