Ans) Common resources are those which are non excludable but rivalrous in nature. Eg- fish in pond, nature, wild animals like elephants and pandas etc.

Due to non excludable and rivalrous nature, common resources are susceptible to over utilisation. This is known as tragedy of commons.

Some steps that government can take to prevent it are ÷

  • Regulation or direct control. Direct control or regulation means directing and governing the activities of individuals through law, order, fine and punishment. For eg- banning and making hunting of wild animals illegal, fine on industries releasing untreated effluents directly into the water body etc.
  • Assigning property rights i.e converting common resources into private property.
  • Creating government protected areas like national parks.
