Answer #1

1. The development of global manager to adapt the changing business environment

Globalisation has changed the global business environment through integration as well as increasing competition. There is also a huge demand side change caused by changes in consumer demography. Therefore, instead of simple management, strategic management has gained ample importance over the period. If is often seen that managers in reality fail to predict accurately or to respond to the changing situation. Progress of the business is affected by the decisions of the managers. The example of General Motors in US market can be given. During 1980s this company enjoyed record profits in US market and thus ignored rise in competition in the global market. Therefore, this company failed to predict future consequences and did not take right measures to face the competition. Hence, during 1990s, General Motors lost its market share from 50% to only one-third of the total market.

Therefore, an important characteristic of global manager is the ability and flexibility to respond speedily to any change in business environment at the global or local level. Another characteristic is for a high absorption capacity company to have a better assessment of external environment. A global manager has to develop a leadership trait and modify organisational culture to get a better business environment.

One strategy to deal with the problems is creative management with innovation. A global manager requires changing attitude, change in organisation culture towards the direction of the change.

2. How organizations and individuals should do to adapt the changing business environment

As mentioned earlier, strong leadership trait is required. Both the individual staff and members of the managerial team need to prepare themselves through training, workshop to successfully adapt swiftly varying business environment. The objectives of the individuals should be aligned with the organisational goal. Management should motivate staffs to understand the benefits and potential risks of the change and training them accordingly. Management can arrange required training on technical skill enhancement or communication and other relevant strategies. Costs increment, loss of sales revenue are potential risks of any change with which company fails to deal effectively. Flexibility and inclination to embrace change make a staff valuable to the company. Another requirement is development of friendly working environment at the workplace to promote and develop better human association.

An example is McDonald’s, which has successfully adapted changing business environment as it operates globally at large scale. Mix of local culture, communication and valuing local demand are major factors of the success of this company.
