Only two goods are made in a city: mike and cookies. milk is made using the tchonology Qm=Min(1/2L,K) and cookies is made using the techonology Qc=Min(L,1/2K), each good sells for 10 pennies a unit. What wage and capital rate is consistent with zero profits.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

From production function we see that L = 2Qm and K = Qm. Similarly L= Qc and K = 2Qc

Cost function is C = wL + rK

Cost function for milk is Cm = 2wQm + rQm and revenue Rm = 10Qm. Profits are zero so Rm = Cm

10Qm = 2wQm + rQm

This gives the first equation 2w + r = 10

Similarly for cookies, we have Cc = wQc + 2rQc and Rc = 10Qc. This gives the second equation 10 = w + 2r

Solve them to see 2w - w + r - 2r = 10 - 10 or w = r

Now use this in first equation to get 2w + w = 10 or w* = 10/3. Since w = r, we have r* = 10/3

The required wage and capital rate are both 10/3 pennies.

a). Two goods are produced in this city....Wheat, bananas...Wheat is made using the technology Qw=Min(0.5L,K) and bananas are made using the technology Qb=Min(L,0.5K). Each good sells for 10 coins a unit. What wage and capital rental rate is consistent with zero profits? b). Capital = 30 , Labor = 36 Now find the level of wheat and banana output that is consistent with full employment.

Imagine an economy makes only clothes (QC) and food (QF) and has two inputs of production: Labor (L) and Capital (K). It takes 4 units of capital and 1 unit of labor to make one unit of clothing. It takes 1 unit of capital and 1 unit of labor to make one unit of food. There is no substitutability between the two inputs. Hint: the total cost of production, TC, is equal to the wL+rK. You can think of L...

Suppose a country produces two goods: wine and cloth. Suppose that each cask of wine always requires 4 labor units and 1 capital unit in its production and each bolt of cloth requires 2 and 5 units respectively of labor and capital. This is regardless of the factor prices. (a) If wage and rental rate of capital each equal 100, what are the unit costs of wine and cloth? (b) Suppose wage and rental rate of capital are both 110,...
