Ans) Chapter 3 -- al- Qa'ida in Afghanistan

Aim- Compare intelliinnce community's assessment of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons in Afghanistan before and after operation ENDURING FREEDOM ( US led invasion of October 2001).

FINDING-

  • CHEMICAL WEAPONS

PRE WAR- Analysts assessed that al-Qaida almost certainly had small quantities of toxic chemicals and pesticides and had produced small amounts of World war 1 era agents such as hydrogen cyanide, chlorine and phosgene.

POST WAR- Reveal relatively little new intelligence on group's chemical efforts. Several miscellaneous items also appeared.

Report indicated that group was attempting to produce blister agent and considered using it to attack America.

  • BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS

PRE WAR- Information in intelligence community's possession since 1990 indicated al-Qaida's members had trained in crude methods of production of biological weapons .

POST WAR- The program was extensive, well organised and operated for two years before September 11.

  • RADIOLOGICAL AND NUCLEAR WEAPONS

​​​​​​​PRE WAR- Intelligence assessed that al-Qaida was unlikely to have built a nuclear device or obtained sufficient fissile material for nuclear weapons and was " significantly less likely " to have acquired a complete nuclear weapon.

POST WAR-Documents found at site indicated that the group was interested in nuclear design. In addition al-Qaida had established contact with Pakistan's scientists who discussed development of nuclear devices.

  • ROLE OF INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY

They convey the collected information to policy makers. And this information is used by CIA and DIA.
