How did the Allies respond to the Berlin blockade?
ANSWER:In response, on June 26, 1948 the Western Allies organised an airlift, flying in supplies with military aircraft to support the entire population of two and a half million people in West Berlin. The recently independent United States Air Force and the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force flew over 200,000 flights in one year, which provided nearly 4700 tons of daily necessities such as food and fuel to the Berliners. Alongside US as well as British personnel the airlift involved aircrews from the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force, and South African Air Force. By the spring of 1949, there were clearly succeeding efforts and, by April, the airlift was delivering more cargo than had previously been transported by rail into the city.
