Local churches for African American such as the 16th Street Baptist Church in the protest activity were fundamental in the organization. The 16th Street Baptist Church in 1963 organized and hosted many meetings led by activists of the Civil Rights Movement. In an attempt to intimidate demonstrators, members of the Ku Klux Klan telephoned the church routinely with threats of bombing intended to disrupt such meetings and regular services of the church
