To implement an overall cap on emissions from electricity generators, it is better to use an emissions trading system compared to simply imposing a cap on every generator. Is this true or false? Explain your answer

Homework Answers

Answer #1

TRUE .

Emissions trading system or cap and trade system is the most effective climate policy . It is efficient both environmentally and economically . A specific level of emission will be achieved and maintained . It also creates a trading market . It is easier to keep track and regulate pollution . Fewer administrative resources required . So it is better to use emissions trading system compared to simply imposing a cap on every generator . It is difficult to keep track on every generator .

Suppose that two firms emit a certain pollutant in Shreveport, Louisiana. The marginal cost (MC) of reducing pollution for each firm is as follows: MC1= 3e1and MC2= 45e2, where e1and e2are the amounts (in tons) of emissions reduced by the first and second firms, respectively. Assume that in the absence of government intervention, Firm 1 generates 500 units of emissions and Firm 2 generates 500 units of emissions. Suppose Shreveport regulators decide to reduce total pollution by 400 units. If...

The Three Hills Power Company provides electricity to a large metropolitan area through a series of almost 200 hydroelectric generators. Management recognizes that even a well-maintained generator will have periodic failures or breakdowns. Energy demands over the past three years have been consistently high and the company is concerned over downtime of generators. It currently employs 4 highly skilled and highly paid ($30 per hour) repairpersons. Each works every fourth 8-hour shift, so there is a repairperson on duty 24...
