Colonialism has a direct link with the contemporary poverty level in most formal colonies. Colonialism is responsible for destroying indigenous industries for the benefits of the colonial masters. For example, colonialism destroyed cotton and garments industries in India which weakened the Indian economically systematically. Such destruction of domestic industries and changing the structure of the economies of the colonies for the benefits of the colonial masters weakened the economy of the colonies which is still responsible for the current state of these economies.
