Now that you have analyzed the U.S. Government's response to Hurricane Katrina, think about the appropriate role for the federal government in disaster response. Some feel that our Nation's history is one of "rugged individualism" and that Americans should be relatively self-sufficient. Others feel that the Government is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of Americans at all costs. What is your position?
The U.S. government's response to Hurricane Katrina has been majorly criticised on grounds of mismanagement and lack of preparation in the relief effort in response to the hurricane and its aftermath/after disaster relief. Specifically, there was a delayed response to the flooding of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Although it is true that the sense of individualism is extremely important, hoever individuality does not suggest that a nation's government steps back from help and support when such an event of high magnitude takes place which not only effects individuals but the nation as a whole. It is the government's duty to take care of its citizens' security too along with liberty.
