The students at a crowded university have trouble waking up before 10 a.m., and most work jobs after 3 p.m. As a result, there is a great deal of demand for classes between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., and classes before and after those hours are rarely full. To make matters worse, the university has a limited amount of classroom space and faculty. This means that not every student can take classes during the most desirable times. Building new classrooms and hiring more faculty are not options. The administration asks for your advice about the best way to solve the problem of demand during the peak class hours. What advice would you give?

Answer #1

The limited amount of classrooms and faculty indicate the resource constraint which requires to be utilized in the best possible way . In order to allocate the scare resources and solve the problem of high demand during peak hours the slots should be allocated as per merit . A preference list for class timings is required from every student . Then the classes should be allocated as per their preferences based on their grades or merit .

This implies that the person with highest grade gets the first opportunity to select the class timings of his or her choice . This should be continued until the classes are filled . Students with lower grades end up with not so desirable class slots .

Well this arrangement can solve two problems , firstly allocation of classes , secondly it can motivate students to work harder and fetch higher grades in order to get proper slots .
