Which of these two positions from the BusinessWeek/Harris Poll do you agree with: That "corporations should have only one purpose--to make the most profit for their shareholders" or that corporations should "have more than one purpose. They also owe something to their workers and the communities in which they operate, and they should sometimes sacrifice some profit for the sake of making things better for their workers and communities"? why?
I support the second position that corporations should have more than one purpose. They also owe something to their workers and the communities in which they operate, and they should sometimes sacrifice some profit for the sake of making things better for their workers and communities.
Corporations use the resources of the society such as labor, the educational system, the infrastructure, etc. Therefore, when a corporation makes a profit, it is quite natural they should pay something back to society. Corporates are part of the society as well and they need to share their fair share of responsibilities as well. In addition, a corporate can function well only in a well-functioning society and a favorable natural environment. Therefore, a corporation must be instrumental in contributing to society in order to ensure its own sustainability.
