Given that on average women makes less than 79% of men’s wage. Is this gap the result of choices made by men and women alike, it is due to discrimination, or is it a combination of both? Explain.

Answer #1

The wage difference between men and women is the result of combination of both. There are many occupations which are considered as the "men's world" and women do not choose that particular occupation for example mining. This trend creates a kind of non declared gender reservation and results in lesser average income of women as compared to men.

Also, the wage gap is the result of gender discrimination as, women are paid lesser than men and also are less preferable, as they are considered to be less efficient than men for the same work task. This discrimination takes place because it is believed that women are less efficient as they can not solely focus on work and needs extra leaves like maternity leave and extra protection.

2. After controlling for age and education, the average woman earns about $0.83 for every $1.00 earned by the average man in the United States. After controlling for occupation to control for compensating differentials (i.e., maybe men accept riskier or more stressful jobs than women, and therefore are paid more), the average woman earns $0.92 for every $1.00 earned by the average man. An analyst concludes from this that occupational choices reduce the wage gap 9 cents, and discrimination explains...

A group of sociologists conducted an analysis of the gender gap in faculty salaries. Data consistently indicate how women faculty members earn less than their male counterparts. Differences have been attributed to individual difference, as well as employer and institutional discrimination. For their analysis the sociologists obtained salary data on 158 men and 148 women, randomly chosen, from a large public research university. Men were estimated to earn an average of $42,340 with a standard deviation of $9,639.19, while women...

For Sociology: Back in 1999, President Bill Clinton announced the commitment of $14 million to establish an “Equal Pay Initiative.” Clinton explained his intention to take a proactive step to close the pay gap between men and women. At that time, women earned about seventy-five cents for every dollar earned by men. Comparable worth as a concept has always been controversial because it seeks to replace the economic market place with government regulations. Diana Furchtgott-Roth and Christine Stolba question the...
