True or False? To reduce the length of a confidence interval of the population proportion, we can either increase the sample size or decrease the confidence level.

Answer #1

Solution

True

If the length of the confidence interval is high we cannot be sure of the true value of a parameter like mean, etc.,But there are the following characteristics which can be adjusted that would result in  length of the confidence interval getting altered

(a) Sample size - By increasing the sample size .The more observations we make the narrower the interval around the sample statistic becomes.

(b) Variability - Reduce the variability

(c) Type of confidence interval - A one-sided confidence level would have a smaller-margin of error than a two-sided confidence interval.

(d) Confidence Level - Lowering / decreasing the confidence level

Which of the following statements is true? The 95% confidence interval is wider than the 99% confidence interval. The ONLY way to reduce the width of a confidence interval is to reduce the confidence level. The required sample size for a population mean is ONLY dependent on population variance. Given population variance and sampling error, higher confidence level results in larger sample size.
