Answer #1

The 54th Regiment of Massachusetts is known as the first black regiment. Their most famous battle took place on July 18, 1863 at Fort Wagner, South Carolina. In that battle, 74 black soldiers and three officers were killed and many more were injured. Their chief, Colonel Shaw, was one of those killed. At James Island, in the Battle of Olustee, and at Honey Hill, South Carolina, the 54th Regiment also served. They returned to Boston in September 1865 and at the Boston Common celebration there were 598 of the 1,007 black soldiers.

In 1869, the US Constitution was amended to give the right to vote to black males. "Eventually, the people who fought for their country would be granted a share in running the country," Massachusetts ' 54th showed that African-Americans were deserving of citizenship "there is no power on earth that can deny that he has earned the right to citizenship in the United States" A large stone memorial in Massachusetts ' Boston Common shows members of the 54th march in battle with their guns raised to their shoulder.

In September 1996, the men who fought and died as members of the 54th Regiment were finally recognized for their devotion to serving the Union, along with all other African-Americans who subsequently fought for their country. A statue for 185,000 black soldiers and white officers is erected in Washington, D.C. During the Civil War, the African-Americans were free to fight, but they had to be free. We were not considered to be slaves or escaped slaves. The African-Americans won Fort Wagner's win, but lost nearly half of their regiment. A total of 36,000 African-Americans were killed, supporting the Union Army. That is why the 54th of Massachusetts was important.
