Answer #1

Dumping means to sell a product in foreign market at a price less than the cost of production basically below the average cost and above marginal cost of production. This is done mainly to get rid of surplus products and dominate the foreign market as this will crush the rivals existing in the market. The same is applied by Australian wines in Chinese market. China is finding alternatives to improve this situation. China did anti dumping investigation against Australian wines exports. This rule stops the producers from selling anything less than the market value. Using this tool a tariff has been imposed which causes the price of Australian wine to be thrice of that of Chinese wine so basically the wine will be effectively get excluded from Chinese market over time.

This is unfortunate as the last four years have seen strong demand for Australian red wines in...

Early in the 21st century, China accumulated about $2 trillion in US government Debt. I remember during that time so called “experts” suggested that meant China had some ability to influence US policy since it owned so much debt it could inflict great damage to the US economy if they were to sell that debt onto the market suddenly and stop buying any more US debt. That never happened. Let’s speculate though and ask if China did sell all that...

POINT/COUNTER-POINT: Should China Be Forced to Alter the Value of Its Currency? POINT: U.S. politicians frequently suggest that China needs to increase the value of the Chinese yuan against the U.S. dollar, even since China has allowed the yuan to float (within boundaries). The U.S. politicians claim that the yuan is the cause of the large U.S. trade deficit with China. This issue is periodically raised not only with currencies tied to the dollar, but also with currencies that have...
