Chilean Sea Bass used to be called Patagonia Tooth Fish
and
Canola Oil used to be called Rapeseed Oil. Do you think
changing the original names make them more attractive to
consumers? Also, could the name changes be examples of
deceptive advertising? Please comment on both questions.
I think changing names might make the goods sound more attracting in some cases like these two examples. If the original name has awkward words like 'tooth' or 'rape'; then changing the names can have a positive effect on the desirability of these goods. People do not want to associate with goods and services with awkward names.
I do not think this is deceptive advertising as here only the name is being changed without changing the functions or qualities of the products. Consumers are not being served low-quality products with high promises. So, I do not think this is deceptive marketing in any way.
