As an international manager, identify key competencies you would look for in choosing expatriates. What might be some of their concerns in taking on overseas assignments? What are some best practices in supporting expats during and after their assignments?

Answer #1

Hiring expatriates, managers usually look for cross domain expertise, linguistics skills, cultural intelligence and fitment, cross industrial experience and knowledge of various corporate laws and cultural practices across nations.

However, expatriation shall have concerns like lack of competitive salary, organisational hierarchy and bureaucracy, different zone timings, lack of flexibility for their families, etc.

Supporting expatriates is important and hence commensurate salary, rewards and perks alongside family insurance, relocation benefits, compliance and legal support, etc is required.
