NIMBY stands for Not in My Backyard. It is a concept which explains how public acceptance for new developments is so low. The reasons behind NIMBY problem are:

  • Disruption : Residents believe that construction will lead to generation of noise and also there are various safety impacts associated with construction.
  • Place : Residents fear that any new development might change the identity and characteristics of the place which they call their home.
  • Trust : Residents, local authorities and developers have lost trust in each other due to complex planning system, and difficulty in communication between the three groups.
  • Services : It is believed by the residents that continuously increasing population is putting pressure on the services like roadways, railways and so on.
