Why is there unlimited protection for trademarks and not for patents?
Unlimited protection of trademarks does not affect innovation. However, if there is unlimited protection of patents, the overall economy and the larger society would be affected as it will prevent innovation. Trademarks are signs, designs or expressions which symbolizes a firm. Therefore, its unlimited protection is in the best interest of the firm without harming other firms or society. However, patents deal with the invention. If unlimited protection is granted on inventions, it will harm other firms and the larger society as there will be no further innovation and dissemination of knowledge.
