What is a probability distribution? What is a continuous probability distribution? Provide an example from business of the usefulness of a probability distribution and/or a continuous probability.

Answer #1

Probability distribution is a function which describes all the possible values that a random variable can take. It is of two types: discrete probability distribution and continuous probability distribution.

Continuous probability distribution is that probability where the random variable is continuous, i.e, it does not take discrete values.

For example,

Consider a man waiting for his friend at a railway platform can be described as a case of continuous probability distribution as the time path is a continuous variable.

Simillary, tossing a coin can be described as a case of discrete probability distribution.

This week, we are studying a type of continuous probability distribution that is called a normal distribution. One real-life example of a normal distribution is IQ score. The mean of this distribution is 100 with a standard deviation of 15. For this week's discussion, do a little research and share another real life example of a normal distribution, including information about the mean and standard deviation. Post a diagram to share with the class.

Provide an example that follows either the binomial or Poisson distribution, and explain why that example follows that particular distribution. In your responses to other students, make up numbers for the example provided by that other student, and ask a related probability question. Then, show the work (or describe the technology steps), and solve that probability example.
