The controversy surrounding Anne Hutchinson is that she was critical of the Puritan leadership of Massachusetts bay colony. Her religious beliefs were very different from the patriarchal Puritan religious beliefs.

Her popularity posed a threat to the patriarchal Puritan culture.

She was tried and convicted following which she along with many of her supporters were banished from the Massachusetts bay colony.

This reaction to Hutchinson clearly reflects that women were suppressed in that time and the society was biased towards the male gender.
