In the landmark case of Heart of Atlanta Motel v. United States, Congress established the right to regulate business within a state (“intrastate commerce”) if it affects interstate commerce. why this case is important to travelers. Why is it important?
‘The Supreme Court held that the government could enjoin private businesses from discriminating on the basis of race under the Commerce Clause’. The case was important to travellers because, after the case the travellers got protection from discrimination based on race. It protects the right of the people to choose any of the shops, restaurants, hotels, motels etc. The ruling on the case states that no one can be excluded from shops or commercial buildings based on their race. “Heart of Atlanta Motel v. United States, (1964), was a landmark decision of the US Supreme Court holding that the Commerce Clause gave the U.S. Congress power to force private businesses to abide by Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in public accommodations”. These helped travellers as they can travel to anywhere and can accommodations irrespective of their race.
