Why does the US government feel that the use of illicit drugs such as cocaine and opium (morphine) should be controlled?
The use of illicit drugs like cocaine and opium will mean there will be rising crime levels in the country and this means that the death rates in the economy will increase. So in cities like Chicago and New York, crime rates spike and so the use of such drugs will need to be controlled. Many of these drugs also have medicinal uses especially morphine in pain management and so wrongful use of such drugs will mean that they are deprived from medicinal uses. The use of cocaine and opium will also impact the US GDP as many people fall out of the labour force due to the impact of drugs. Unemployment rates will increase and also consumption levels fall as people earn insufficient disposable income. All these reasons make the US government care a lot about the control of cocaine and opium and related drugs.
