We are all faced with ethical dilemmas in our everyday lives. For most of us, our day-to-day experiences do not require us to make decisions that raise significant ethical issues. On other days, we are all faced with the challenge of navigating more serious moral conflicts. Your task for this week’s critical thinking and application question is to reflect back on your past week—at work, at home, out in public—in which you were faced with making a decision that had potential ethical conflicts. Then, answer the following questions:

  • What was the ethical dilemma you found yourself confronted with?
  • What was your initial response?
  • What philosophical principles informed your decision?
  • Why did you react the way you did?
  • Please keep in mind that you do not need to share an experience that is personal, painful, or serious in nature to successfully complete this activity. For example, you might decide to reflect on your morning coffee routine, and having to choose between a Styrofoam cup (disposable, convenient, quick) and carrying a washable mug everywhere (good for the environment, but you have to carry it around and wash it every day). There are lots of ways to look at this situation from the perspective of ethics. Be creative, but make sure to include key themes and concepts from Lesson 1 to inform your answer.

Ethical Values can be:

  • Avoidance of self serving to greedy people and those who are aimed at excess profits and in future contract.
  • Using a perspective that is favorable to all, comprising all the study results.
  • Define assumptions narrowly, serving interests of the majority potentially.

Sometimes, it is good to set oneself side and work for the betterment of the masses in their acts and interests. Our actions should be like, it is in favor of each individual. Ethical decisions sometimes seem as very difficult to take into account but actually that is the time when one has to define oneself by acting in favor of everyone.
