GPA (grade point average) is the
average of the grades achieved in different subjects in a
particular year, semester or trimester, whereas the GPI (grade
point index) is the ratio of the sum of grades achieved in
different subjects and the sum of the maximum grade value of all
the subjects under considerations. So, GPA is expressed in terms of
the average and GPI is considered as % or ratio. GPI can also
consider non-academic activities also.
For example, a semester has for subject A, B, C and D with maximum
grade of 10 in each subject. Now, a student earns grade of 8 in
subject A, grade of 6 in subject B, grade of 8 in subject C and
grade of 10 in subject D.
Now,
GPA for the semester = (8+6+8+10)/4 = 8
GPI for the semester = (8+6+8+10)/(10+10+10+10) = 80%
