Bonafide occupational qualification are those qualifications that can be considered by employers while employing employees and this qualification should be linked to essential job duties and this should be something without which the business cannot operate. this allows the employers to hire on the basis of race, sex, age and national origin.

for example, aeroplane pilots are hired on the basis of age due to safety concerns or a Muslim mosque employ only Muslim Imams because it is an essential part of the job he is going to perform.

Unless required, these qualifications may be termed as discriminatory. For eg, one cannot discriminate on the basis of religion while hiring cleaning staff for a mosque because the job can be done by people of religion it requires only the ability to clean effectively.
