explain how you feel American auto manufacturers will respond to the continued use of tariffs on Chinese imports into the United States.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The continued use of tariffs on chinese imports into United states will increase the relative price of imports and make domestically produced automobiles more attractive in the market. This reduces the demand for imports and increases demand for domestic automobiles. This provides protection to the American automobile manufacturers and increases the price of automobiles thereby increasing their profits by reducing competition. So, the American auto manufacturers will appreciate the continued use of tariffs on chinese imports and will support the government in this policy.

Governments use tariffs to manage the politics of international economic integration. By targeting tariff rates to individual products, governments navigate competing demands on trade policy. But existing theories miss an important aspect of tariffs: they also need to be enforced at border crossings, which for some governments creates substantial challenges. Faced with high tariffs, firms can mis classify their products into categories that face lower tariffs.
