  • When a specie has a role analogous to the role of a keystone in an arch, it is termed as keystone species.
  • These species have large effect on the environment they live in despite of the fact whether they are small in number.
  • They have been called so since the keystone is under the slightest duress of any other stone in an arch, however the arch crumbles without it.
  • Without them ecosystem will dramatically differ or cease to exist altogether. Example of keystone species are wolf, Sea Otter, Sea Star etc.
