Two reasons why the actual unemployment was significantly higher than as stated by the unemplloyment rate is because:

  • Unemployment rate tend to ignore the people who are out of the labor force, this might be because they are discouraged workers and have stopped looking for work in the market. This significantly reduces the number of peole looking for job and thus reduce the unemployment rate.
  • UNderemployed and people doing part time jobs are considered as employed in the market even if they can contribute much more to the economy, counting this under employed workforce as employed reduce the unemployment rate.
