Explain Malthus' theory of the relationship between the size of the population and living standards over time. Explain why his theory appears to be wrong for the developed world.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

According to the Malthusian theory, the population grows exponentially while the food supply grows arithmetically. Any increase in food supply will be eliminated by increase in the size of the population. Therefore, with population increase, the standard of living will decline due to elimination of any surplus food by the fast growing population. In the long run, everyone will die due to scarcity of food. Therefore, there is a negative relationship between population growth and standard of living. In the developed world, it has been observed that despite the rapid increase in population, the standard of living has also consistently improved due to technological advances . Therefore, the Malthusian theory appears to be wrong in developed countries.

Q) A broad sense heritability figure which shows the relationship- between parental egg size and offspring egg size has an r2 value of 0.1225, would natural selection act upon the egg size? - The value means that offspring do not resemble parent, any change is due to environment. so will natural selection act on the egg size trait? why or why not pls explain in detail

1. Researchers want to know if there is a relationship between commute time and commute distance in the population of all Atlanta commuters. They collected data from a sample of 500 Atlanta commuters and computed a correlation of r = 0.807 between commute time and commute distance. StatKey was used to construct a 95% confidence interval of [0.725, 0.867] for the population correlation. A.
