Demographic transition refers to the transition from high birth and death rates to lower birth and death rates as a nation or region makes development from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system. The fall in birth rate and death rate that occurs during the demographic transition may transform the age structure. As death rate falls during the second stage of the transition, it causes primarily an increase in the child population. However further fall in both mortality and fertility will eventually result in an aging population, and an increase in the aged dependency ratio. A rise in the aged dependency ratio often shows that a population has reached below replacement levels of fertility, and consequently does not have enough people in the working ages to support the nation, and the growing dependent population
