While it wasn’t the first social media outlet, Facebook is largely acknowledged as the one that started it all. Eventually, the costs of satisfying the needs of “giving people the power to share” however, outstripped revenue – especially since there really were no revenues for the first six years of existence. Facebook’s foray into advertising had already been met with resistance by purists prior to the controversial IPO in 2012 – which further fuelled small but growing dissention. It would appear, however, that the billion plus users have adapted to the Facebook’s need to make money – partially because it provides much needed capital to keep it technologically and socially current.
