Answer: It is true that innovation of transport reduced distances and made people live in city outskirts with less costs and relieved extreme pressure on core city civic amenities. In this process many suburbs developed.

I think, the spatial structure of cities will not change by one innovation but a combination of many small innovations.

Hyperloop to reduce travel time, electric and driver less cars which will reduce parking burden. Advancement in service sector that enables work from home and machines replacing men in factories will again make people go away from cities.
