This is because, train travel is not possible as there is Pacific Ocean between Japanese mainland and US mainland, and after that there is thousands of kilometers that needs to be covered from the western boundaries of the US to reach its eastern cost along the Atlantic Ocean where New York is located. For the same reason, walking and bicycle are also ruled out.

However, through video conferencing, one can avoid using air travel between Tokyo and New York and can attend and talk to people in the US by sitting in Japan and vis-versa.
