Is a prison a society unto itself? What does it mean to say that there is a prison subculture? What types of characteristics make up this subculture? Where do the values of prison society come from?

Yes Prison itself is society where different types of people who are convicted under different sentences come and reach there and stay there. Thus it forms a group of living together, So it is a society.

Prison subculture is that customes, beleifs , life styles and attitude of people in a particular prison to live together is called prison subculture.

People of different age groups with different attitudes, characters, values , regions etc stay in these places thus these all forms a subculture where they follow the rules of the prison.

The values of prison society comes from the people itself prisons are places where they have to serve sentences for the crimes they committed and regeret their mistakes and learn from their past to be a better citizens.
