The colonists settled in America for many reasons, among which religious freedom was of utmost importance. The colonies comprised three main regions-Quakers, Puritan, Catholics, each with its own unique thought on education, thus the overriding motive of schooling in the American Colonies were to ensure pupil's religion salvation. Students were asked to learn English, Greek and Latin to pursue their theological studies. Also the religious purpose was made in two early laws: The Massachusetts Act of 1642; and Massachusetts Act of 1647.
