Draw a supply and demand graph for the market for electricity produced by coal. Indicate the market equilibrium. Then, assuming that there's a fixed social cost not borne by the supplier or consumer (externality), draw the social marginal cost curve and indicate the socially optimal (efficient) price and quantity.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

This is a negative externality, a negative externality occurs whenever the production or the consumption activity inflicts an adverse effect on the third party. The electricity production by coal pollutes the air and cause to many diseases m, it is clear that the production has negative external effects on the society. When there is a negative externality , the socially efficient output will be less than the private market output.

Suppose that our local power station burns coal to generate electricity. The demand and supply functions for electricity are given by P = 12−0.5Q and P = 2+0.5Q, respectively. However, for each unit of electricity generated, there is an externality. Suppose MEC = 1. (a) Find the free market equilibrium and illustrate it geometrically. (b) Calculate the efficient (i.e. socially optimal) level of production. (c) Calculate the deadweight loss.

Draw the supply and demand for wheat on a graph, and indicate the equilibrium price and quantity. Suppose rice and wheat are consumption substitutes, and corn and wheat are production substitutes. Describe and show what happens in the market for wheat when 2 events occur at the same time: 1) the price of corn increases, and 2), a drought (lack of rain) occurs in rice-growing regions, causing the supply of rice to fall.. Suppose the drought in rice has a...

The paper industry is the major industrial source of water pollution. The inverse demand curve for the paper market (which is also the marginal benefit curve) is P = 450 - 2Q where Q is the quantity consumed when the price consumers pay is P. The inverse supply curve (also the marginal private cost curve) for refining is MPC = 30 + 2Q. The marginal external cost is MEC = Q where MEC is the marginal external cost when the...
