Social stratification means society is divided in different categories, class, layers or groups due to gender, caste, race, wealth, and religion etc.

Society stratifies due to:

  • Gender discrimination means male- female difference.
  • Unequal distribution of income and wealth
  • Different types of religions
  • Racism
  • Type of education
  • Social status etc.

In following ways American culture stratifies people:

  • On the basis of gender; male-female.
  • On the basis on income; extremely rich, rich, middle class, below average, extremely poor etc.
  • Racism; skin color, culture etc.
  • On Social status and political basis etc.

Functions of stratification :

  • Proper functioning of the society.
  • Smooth functioning of economy
  • Encourages people to work more due to their low income.
