During the 20th century many Hispanic immigrants came to United States fleeing the poverty, violence, and dictatorial regimes of Latin America and emigrated mainly to Southwest, New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Florida, although the Hispanics and Latinos emigrated through the country. Most Hispanics who immigrate to the United States are Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Salvadorans. There are currently over a million descendants of the last four groups in the United States. Throughout the twentieth century, the Hispanic population has been characterized by a high population growth, both for the emigration and the birth rate.
