Farmer Hoglund has discovered that on his farm, he can get 30 bushels of corn per acre if he applies no fertilizer. When he applies N pounds of fertilizer to an acre of land, the marginal product of fertilizer is 1 - N/200 bushels of corn per pound of fertilizer.

1. Write down a function that states Farmer Hoglund’s yield per acre as a function of the amount of fertilizer he uses. (Note: you will need a bit of calculus integral here.)

2. If the price of corn is $3 a bushel and the price of fertilizer is $p per pound (where p < 3), how many pounds of fertilizer should he use per acre in order to maximize profits? (Hint: you can directly solve for the optimal N by setting up the profit function and find the optimal N using a first order condition, or use the optimal condition to maximize profit: MR=MC).

3. Hoglund’s neighbor, Skoglund, has better land than Hoglund. In fact, for any amount of fertilizer that he applies, he gets exactly twice as much corn per acre as Hoglund would get with the same amount of fertilizer. How much fertilizer will Skoglund use per acre when the price of corn is $3 a bushel and the price of fertilizer is $p a pound? (Hint: Start by writing down Skoglund’s marginal product of fertilizer as a function of N.)

A farmer estimates that if he digs his potato crop now he will have 120 bushels which he will be able to sell for $1 per bushel. If he waits, the crop will grow by 20 bushels per week while the price will drop by $0.10 per bushel per week. When should he dig his crop to maximize his return?

A farmer produces 10,000 bushels of corn per season, which he sells in September. A good friend of his suggested he sells the whole production in the future's market. The settlement price of the corn futures contract for september is 403.4 (or 403'4 in CME parlance). The projection indicates the spot price of corn in September will either be 3.5 or 4.5 Dollars per bushel with equal pribability. The farmer is very weary of selling it all in the futures...

Six months from now, Farmer Larry will harvest 25,000 bushels of corn. In doing so, he incurs costs of $111,000. The current spot price of corn is $4.90 per bushel, and the six-month forward price is $5.05. Suppose Larry decides to sell corn forward. What total profit would he earn if the market price of corn at harvest time is $4.30, $4.70, $5.10, and $5.50, respectively? show all steps

A farmer is creating a whole farm plan for the upcoming production year. He has 800 acres of land available for crop production. He wants to maximize his gross margin of two crops, soybeans and corn. He believes that he can obtain a gross margin of $80 per acre of soybeans and $100 per acre of corn. He has 3500 available labor hours to allocate between the two crops and has determined that soybeans will require 2.5 hours of labor...

Problem 1-1: A farmer owns 450 acres of land. He is going to plant each acre with wheat or corn. Each acre planted with wheat yields $4000 profit, requires three workers, and requires two tons of fertilizer. Each acre planted with corn yields $2000 profit, requires two workers, and requires four tons of fertilizer. There are currently 1000 workers and 1200 tons of fertilizer available. To hedge against risk, the farmer wants to sure that the acres of wheat do...

14. A purely competitive wheat farmer can sell any wheat he grows for $20 per bushel. His five acres of land show diminishing returns because some are better suited for wheat production than others. The first acre can produce 1,000 bushels of wheat, the second acre 900, the third 800, and so on. a. Fill in the table below to answer the following questions. How many bushels will each of the farmer’s five acres produce? How much revenue will each...

Suppose you are a farmer and there are two technologies that can be used for irrigation. Flood irrigation is relatively inefficient: for every 10 acre-feet of water applied to an acre of land, only 3 af are used by the plants. Drip irrigation is much more efficient: if 4 acre-feet of water are applied to the land using this technology, plants will actually consume 3 af. The agronomic production function is given by y = 4e − 0.25e2, where e...
