Should a business owner hire independent contractors instead of employees?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

I think business owners should hire independent contractors instead of employees. Independent contractors can reduce costs and efforts of the firm. Firstly, independent contractors can be hired or discharged from work easily as compared to employees without much legal hassle. Secondly, the benefits extended to the independent contracts are much less than the same extended to employees. This can reduce costs for the firm. Thirdly, hiring independent contractors reduces instances of costly lawsuits, which are common while in case of hiring and firing employees. Fourthly, independent contractors provide flexibility to an organization as it can change its organizational plans easily by getting rid of the unwanted workers in case of business failure or change in external environment.

As with question 4, assume FHP would agree to pay $2.20 per mile if Cascade would sign a five-year contract. Further, assume Cascade would incur incremental fixed costs of $20,000 annually. These costs would include insurance, rental trailers,...
