Answer #1

The carbon tax is levied directly on the Greenhouse gas emissions or the carbon content fossil fuels. The major purpose of the carbon tax is to reduce the carbon emissions of the countries. Also, the carbon tax helps to create alternative energy at a cheaper cost. It also increased the tax-shift from or the tax shift away from the federal income tax or sales tax.

In the same way, the cap and trade system given a cap that industries can release carbon emission to the environment. Any industry cannot reach this cap limit as by law. The benefits of cap and trade in the sense that companies would reduce their cost of emissions because of the low cost and they can sell more product and achieve higher profits. It also encourages to supplement the taxpayer resources and find alternative energy solutions.

economics There is a concern that carbon emissions that are a byproduct of the burning of coal and other fuels contributes to global warming. One proposed solution is to tax the use of these fuels based on their carbon content. The following table gives information on the demand and supply of coal: Price ($/ton) 400 350 300 250 200 Quantity demanded 10 12 14 16 18 Quantity supplied 18 16 14 12 10 What will be the free-market price and...

Suppose the marginal damage of carbon pollution is constant, equal $40/ton. If you create a carbon tax, what should be its value so that we maximize social welfare? Suppose the marginal cost of carbon abatement (reducing pollution) is given by P = 10 + Q, with P measured in $/ton and Q measured in tons. If we want to create a cap and trade program that is equivalent to the tax above (maximizing social welfare), how many tons (Q) should...

7. Under first-degree price discrimination, a monopolist produces the efficient output. Is this true or false? Explain using an appropriate diagram. 8. Several generators pollute the environment by emitting carbon dioxide. Generators have different costs of reducing carbon emissions. The government wants to put a cap on total emissions. Putting a cap on each generator is more efficient compared to issuing tradeable emissions permits to each generator. Is this true or false? Explain your answer. (5m)

Suppose there are two firms producing coal. Coal sells at a constant price p = $60/ton. Each firm, i, has private marginal cost PMCi = 5 + 1.1qi, where qi is the quantity of coal firm i produces in tons, and the units of PMCi are $/ton. Each ton of coal produced creates 10 lbs of SO2 pollution. a) Suppose there is a cap-and-trade system for SO2 emissions in this coal industry. If the regulator sets the cap at 800...
