The aging population may be a problem in labour supply. Discuss

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Working age population acts as the source of labor supply.

The working age population is consisted of people between age 15 to 64.

Greater the proportion of people between the age of 15 to 64, greater would be the working age population and, therefore, greater would be the labor supply.

If a country's population is getting aged at significant rate then this implies that aging population as proportion of total population is increasing .

This also implies that people above age of 64 or number of retirees is increasing.

This will reduce the working age population and as working age population will decrease, the labor supply will also decrease.

Thus, in this manner, the aging population may be a problem with respect to labor supply.
