How does Boolean Algebra compare with regular algebra? Find one example

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Boolean algebra is the mathematics used for logic circuits. In Boolean algebra, the variables have value of either 0 or 1. The operations are performed as binary operations. The three basic operations are AND, OR and NOT.

It is used for designing logical circuit. The values assigned hold a logical significance.

0 means false and 1 means true, or 0 means low and 1 means high. There is a concept of compliments which is used for defining binary operation.

Examples of a Boolean algebra expression-

  • AB + A'B
  • XYZ + XY'Z'

Regular algebra uses multiple number of variables. The value of a variable can be any number. The value of a variable holds numerical significance.

The four basic operations are +, -, * and /.

There is a concept of inverse for each operation.

Examples of regular algebra:

  • 2x + 3y = 4
  • x + 5y + z = 7

In addition to NAND and NOR, find four more two-input boolean functions that are each individually universal. Give a logic expression for each of your functions, using AND, OR, and NOT, and prove that each of these functions is individually universal, by showing for example that you can implement AND, OR, and NOT with your function. You may use the constant values zero and one as inputs to your universal functions to implement other functions. Name your functions f1, f2,...
