Douglass learned to write by visiting Durgin and Bailey's ship-yard. He saw ship carpenters writing on pieces of timber, labeling them. He then moved on to tricking the kids in town. Douglass spent countless hours writing on whatever he could. Brick walls Fences, and pavement. Douglass finally moved on and started writing in the empty spaces of Master Thomas' discarded copy-books.
