A brand new SGI Altix Intel Itanium system has 64 CPUs running Linux OS. What is the maximum number of processes in RUNNING state at a single time when it executes 200 processes? What is the maximum number of processes in BLOCKED state?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

A single processor CPU can execute only one process at any given time.

So with 64 CPU, the maximum number of process in RUNNING state is 64.

The maximum number of process in BLOCKED state is 200 since there might be a scenario where all the process require some resource or I/O operation which is not currently available. Thus all of them can be blocked.

Assume several processes are running concurrently on a single processor system. Assume also that at time 2, P1 is running, no system resources (other than the CPU and memory) are being used, and that no process is in a blocked state waiting for an event to occur. Consider the following events: At time 3: P1's time slice expires At time 6: P2 is dispatched and given the CPU At time 7: P2 executes a command to read from disk unit...

Linux commands in terminal What processes are running? In the previous task ("Command Based") you were already familiar with the command "ps" which shows some or all of the processes that are running. When you run "ps", you start a new process and you can see the actual process in the output. Later in this task you will use "ps" more. The "top" command also shows an overview of the processes that exist on the system but it the overview...

A shoe manufacturer is considering developing a new brand of running shoes. The business problem facing the marketing analyst is to determine which variables should be used to predict durability (i.e., the effect of long-term impact). Two independent variables under consideration are X1 (FOREIMP), a measurement of the forefoot shock-absorbing capability, and X2 (MIDSOLE), a measurement of the change in impact properties over time. The dependent variable Y is LTIMP, a measure of the shoe's durability after a repeated impact...

A new restaurant just opened-up in a town near you. The manager of this establishment has asked you to evaluate their drive-thru system queue. More specifically, the restaurant owner wishes to better understand the relationship between service rates and the resulting average amount of time a customer spends in the system. The manager has a choice in the number of servers working ranging from a minimum of 8 servers to a maximum of 15 servers (only consider integers values of...

3)      A project manager at System Design Corporation has collected the following data on the size of software programs and the length of programming time. The company is bidding on a new system that is estimated to consist of 300,000 lines of code. Use a scatter plot to find the correlation function of coding time to the program size and estimate the number of days it would take to code the system. Module Size in 1000 lines of code (KLOC)...

A new design for the braking system on a certain type of car has been proposed. For the current system, the true average braking distance at 40 mph under specified conditions is known to be 120 ft. It is proposed that the new design be implemented only if sample data strongly indicates a reduction in true average braking distance for the new design. (a) Define the parameter of interest. μ = true average braking distance for the old design p̂...

What is Cannibalization? Cannibalization results when the sales of a new product in part come from sales taken away from other products sold by that firm. Cannibalization most commonly occurs when a firm introduces a new flanker brand or line extension into the same product line in which it already has brand representation. For example, when Proctor & Gamble introduces a new brand of laundry detergent into its extensive line of detergents, some sales for the new brand will highly...
