Explain why a comprehensive password policy is critical and how using default or poor administrator passwords can lead to system compromise.

Answer #1

Answer)

As passwords are solely responsible for most of the data breaches hence they are considered to be the most critical component in terms of maintaining a very strong security mechanism. It is important to have a strong password as an enterprise would adopt the password complexity policies which is needed for increasing the entropy in a way that the password would turn to be much more difficult to crack it.

Having a weak password would lead to rapid guessing of such a password with respect to execting the brute force attack with the use of a subset for every password. Hence one should not share the password with anyone for any specific reasons. This can lead to breaking many systems with regard to compromising a specific password account.

The AccessPlus system at ISU has the following policy for creating a password: -Passwords must be exactly 8 characters in length. -Passwords must include at least one letter (a-z, A-Z) or supported special character (@, #, $ only). -All letters are case-sensitive. -Passwords must include at least one number (0-9). -Passwords cannot contain spaces or unsupported special characters. According to this policy, how many possible AccessPlus passwords are available? (Round to the nearest trillion)

A company wants to impose a more secure password system for its employees to use on the company’s network. The current policy requires a minimum of seven characters. The system under consideration requires a minimum of eight characters. The new system will allow repetition of characters, but not doubling (e.g., the sequence 121 would be acceptable, but not 112). For both password systems, assume the following: Only alphanumeric characters can be used in the passwords, without any spaces or symbols....

A version of Microsoft LAN manager software supports passwords of length 14, using 67 characters (e.g., upper and lower case letters, digits, and punctuations). For brevity suppose that all passwords are required to be 14 characters long. a. Determine the number of possible passwords that can be generated. b. Except that the software has a flaw: The software stores a password as 2 separate strings of length 7, i.e., the password the user types is read and compared as 2...

It was stated that the inclusion of the salt in the UNIX password scheme increases the difficulty of guessing. Let’s use a case to explain why it is asserted that the salt increases security although the salt is stored in plaintext in the same entry as the corresponding ciphertext password. Let’s assume that (1) a computing system adopts the traditional UNIX password scheme (password length: up to 8 characters) and (2) the adversary has obtained a password file containing 4000...
